We are truly excited to collaborate with Glenn Vilppu in the 2019 Masterclasses series. Ateliers Westerdok has a strong history in model and portrait studies and courses. In the open studio model drawing serious storyboard artists and animators attend to keep their drawing skills. On Wednesday we tutor the students van the famous dutch Film Academy in drawing to prepare their animations and special effects. The welcome of Glenn Vilppu will be tempting and attractive for our large group of portrait and model drawing fanatics as well students and fulltime amateurs.
Glenn Vilppu is a Living Master. He is gentle, humble, warm, humorous and when he teaches, he cares about his students learning - he sits with every student in class and patiently demonstrates his technique. A lesson with Glenn is valuable & memorable.
Workshop Head Drawing
Weekend of June the 22 & 23 2019
Learn master artist Glenn Vilppu’s structural approach to head drawingthrough an understanding of construction, anatomy and planes. Gain an understanding of the fundamentals of expression and how to capture it in a quick sketch.
During this workshop Glenn Vilppu will share a constructive approach to develop your ability to draw the head, focusing on understanding the structure and light rather than just copying.
This class will include an analysis of the planes of the head and the way the underlying anatomical structure of the skull affects the surface planes. A discussion of variations in types of heads and individual features (eyes, noses, etc.) and the way they affect the overall individual character of the model. Expression – how to capture it from life as well as the fundamental elements that create a variety of expressions. Rendering techniques including control of tones, cross hatching. Use of water soluble pencils and sketching methods. Artist of all levels are welcome; previous drawing experience not required.

Glenn Vilppu presents a logical step by step procedure where you can focus on one element at a time. First, get the gesture, then construct using simple forms, add appropriate anatomical elements then tone and detail bring the figure to life! Focusing first in the gesture gives the drawings a sense of movement and life. Glenn will work with each artist individually as they draw from model.
Figure Drawing focusing on understanding the movement and structure of the human figure rather than just copying. Anatomy and use of light will also be discussed.
Join this Glenn Vilppu class and learn his traditional, internationally recognized Renaissance approach to figure drawing. His methodology is applicable whether your direction is fine art, illustration, computer or traditional animation.

Workshop outdoors drawing and painting
Weekday in August from 13th till 17th 2019, painting including 2 museum visits
Subjects will include Landscapes, Environments and Figures, how to make them works in the same sketch, what to do when people move, how to create space, different ways to use light and more. Daily demos with various media including pencil, water soluble pencil, watercolor, ink and wash. Artists are free to use the media of their choice.

All levels are welcome. Glenn usually has a range of students in his classes from beginners to professionals. He gives his lesson and then works with each artist individually each day.
Minumum and maximum number of enrollments
Minumum is 8 enrollments. Up to 25 students is fine. Even a few more if more want to attend.
During the sessions with life model, Ateliers Westerdok takes care of booking and paying the professional models.
Students must pay their own entrance at the Rijksmuseum.
Materials are not included. Students can use any paper except newsprint. Glenn uses Caran d'Ache or Faber Castell water soluble pencils or Faber Castell Polychrome in Sanguine or similar colors and often a waterbrush. Black is also okay. Any pencils will work though. Charcoal is not so good for the way he will be teaching.
Suggestion of tools and materials:

- other pencils of student's choice

Stay for students
Students must arrange their own stay in Amsterdam. Students take care of their own food. Lunch can be taken at the studio. Coffee, tea can be bought at the studio. Tips for a hotel with discount can be asked at Ateliers Westerdok.

Glenn Vilppu Biography
Through his education in Fine Arts and his impressive career in the American Animation Industry, Glenn Vilppu has developed a deep understanding of drawing the human figure; uniting the constructive approach of the classical art with the lightness in movement of animation.
For more than 50 years, he has been teaching; focusing on explaining the logic and practical application of drawing. Rather than teaching a style, Glenn Vilppu teaches tools of visual communication and guides the students in acquiring knowledge with the motto:“There are no rules, just tools.”
Glenn Vilppu is an internationally renowned draftsman, painter, and instructor whose books and DVDs are used by universities, art schools and independent students around the world. Vilppu has had at least 20 solo exhibitions, and is represented in collections throughout the United States., Canada, Asia and Europe.
The Vilppu Academy online art school is an international resource for students wishing to improve their drawing skills remotely. Vilppu’s approach to teaching drawing has become the standard for professional artists, used by numerous teachers and applied by the tens of thousands of students of his teaching.
Vilppu earned BFA and MFA Degrees in Fine Art at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA where he was an instructor for thirteen years. From there he started and operated his own school for five years teaching all subjects related to art.
At the age of 40 Vilppu brought his approach to traditional figure drawing and composition to bear in the Animation Industry, working for more than 20 years on both features and shorts at all of the major studios. He concurrently taught other artists at these studios as well as at many game and special effects studios.
Vilppu teaches annual workshops at Ringling College of Art and Design as he has for more than ten years as well as Sketching Tours and Workshops in Europe as he has for the past 20 years. Two to four months of the year are devoted to Sketching Tours and workshops at Art Schools, Universities, Studios and Private Art Groups throughout the world, from Italy, Greece, France, Sweden, Denmark and England to Singapore, Brunei, Korea and Japan.
Glenn Vilppu is a founding member and contributing artist at New Masters Academy.
Currently Vilppu teaches on site at the University of California Los Angeles Animation Workshop of the School of Film and Video, and the American Animation Institute as well as his online drawing school.
